Do not accept:
- Two party checks
- Counter or temporary checks
- Voided checks
- Payroll checks
Accept checks only from your local trade area
Amount of purchase only.
Make sure the check is made out to your business name.
Make sure the name on the check matches the name signed by the check writer.
Ask to see a picture ID, preferably a driver's license.
Write the license number and state of issue on the check yourself, don't let the customer do it.
Make sure there is an address on the check. Do not accept P.O. Boxes, write the physical address from the ID if it does not match the check.
Make sure there is a telephone number on the check. The merchant should ask for a daytime and cell phone number as well.
Trust your instincts! If something doesn't seem right, ask questions or ask for another form of payment. You are not obligated to accept a check.
